Mallika brunches with Yanni, Dylan!

A source present at the brunch reveals that Mallika sat between studio film director Jesse Dylan (son of legendary musician Bob Dylan) and world famous music composer Yanni.

Overheard was discussion of Mallika's next few American film projects of which our source says Mr. Dylan seemed to be involved. Mr. Dylan directed the Will Ferrell film "Kicking and Screaming" and "American Wedding" for Universal Studios, among others. Also mentioned was music for "Hisss", currently in post-production at a Hollywood facility. Yanni was heard offering to provide his music for the highly-anticipated film.

Some invited guests and friends of Miss Sherawat who were unable to attend include Warner Bros. studio film director Jay Chandrashakur and the 'CEO of HipHop" Russell Simmons, both also rumored to be in talks with the Indian star on upcoming projects.

Mind this Murugan

Fifteen years ago a south Indian cowboy stormed on the television screen with guns blazing. He asked viewers of Channel V to ‘Mind It’. Now, Quick Gun Murugun is back, in the rejuvenated avatar of Dr Rajendra Prasad on celluloid and under the direction of Shashanka Ghosh. On August 28, Quick Gun Murugun, defender of vegetarianism and nemesis of Rice Plate Reddy, is going to ride back into town.Former ad man, ex-creative head of Channel V and director of Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, Ghosh tells us about the journey. Tell us about the genesis of Quick Gun Murugun, the movie. When we shot those promos back in 1993/94, none of us imagined that it would become our calling card. In fact Rajesh Devraj and I wrote the script soon after we made the 60 second promos. We started shopping around the script only at the end of the 90s and took to about 20 producers including Ram Gopal Varma who didn’t know how to deal with it. While working on another script, The Betel Nut Killers, I met Anand Surapur of Phat Phish and he was keen that I make Quick Gun first. How did you come to cast a Telugu actor in this Tamil-English film? I had Arshad Warsi in mind for the lead role until Anand said he wanted me to take a fat, middle-aged south Indian man. He suggested I meet Dr Rajendra Prasad. So on Rambha, Nasser and others were added to the cast. The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions too.Who played the original character?Sivakumar. He was a dubbing artist I spotted him in the studio five hours before the shoot was to begin and grabbed him for the part. I think he is in Madurai now. Tell us a little about the plot. It’s an action comedy centred on Quick Gun Murugan, a cowboy — someone who looks after cows. He has his lady loves, Mango Dolly andLocket Girl. When a vegetarian village in south India is taken over by non-vegetarian bandits,Murugun fights for his principals and is killed.Twenty-five years later, he’s reborn in Mumbai where Rice Plate Reddy now runs the successful McDosa empire.Did you watch any south Indian films as part of your research?I have never seen a south Indian film. In fact, I hardly watch movies. This is the creation of writer Rajesh Devraj. How do you react to the tag of ‘genre-busting director’ given to you?I would expand that to an Indian brat pack of filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Nishikant Kamat, Imtiaz Ali and Sudhir Mishra. We are all working with a sensibility that a few years ago would have been considered marginal, but not anymore. We might have been ahead of — or besides — the times once, but now audiences are changing. I do find it hard to define myself within genres. My thought is to create a ridiculous situation and make the actors do it as credibly as possible.

Priyanka's got no reason to sweat it out

Priyanka Chopra definitely has one of the hottest bods in Bollywood, but the actress doesn’t spend long hours in the gym like her contemporaries.

A fact most girls must be jealous of, we are sure. Priyanka says, “I hate going to the gym. I was supposed to lose some weight after shooting a certain part of Fashion. But everyday when my trainer would turn up, I would give her some excuse to avoid my workout session. Soon she realised it and gave me a more outdoor kind of workout. That worked for me. Plus, I am blessed with great metabolism, so I don’t have to watch what I am eating.” Well some girls just have all the luck!

Bipasha plays gym instructor in All The Best

Bipasha Basu who is a fitness freak in real life will now be seen essaying the role of a gym instructor in Rohit Shetty's comedy flick All The Best. A source reveals, "Bipasha's performance is very natural in the movie since she is acting in a role of a gym instructor. Gymming and working out has always been a part of the actress's routine. When the role was initially narrated to her, she was quite excited with the fact that she will be working out in the movie and for the movie."

The source continues, "She also has donned a different look. The model-turned actress has grown her tresses and comparatively has a sporty look. She is paired opposite Ajay Devgan and plays the role of his wife in the movie. A major chunk of the movie was shot in Goa and the actress was often seen working out after their pack up. This made the other cast members such as Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Mugdha Godse and even the director Rohit Shetty work out and be a regular at the gym."

"Due to her regular work outs, the director use to pull her leg by saying that she should not take her role so seriously, for the fact that even after shooting and pack up she was seen pulling people to work out," adds the source.

Salman Khan's jaan passes away

Salman Khan's beloved pet died early yesterday morning, six months after her companion, MySon. Salman Khan's beloved pet MyJaan died yesterday at an animal hospital in Parel. MyJaan had been suffering for the last couple of months. In June, she had been admitted to the same hospital. When she was admitted then, she was seriously sick and was given a separate room. At that time, when Salman had driven down MyJaan in the night, she was in a very critical. She subsequently recovered.

Says a source, "MyJaan had been ill for some time. Also, she had been missing MySon, another dog of Salman, ever since he passed away earlier this year. On Tuesday evening, Salman attended the music release of Boney Kapoor's Wanted and then rushed to shoot for Vipul Shah's London Dreams.

It was early yesterday morning that he was told of MyJaan's death. Salman rushed home, went to his Panvel farm to bury MyJaan and came back later that morning. Last evening, he was shooting for 10 Ka Dum but he was in a very low mood and couldn't concentrate. His normal cheerful demeanour was missing. Salman doted on his two dogs and never considered them as animals but like his family. Now with MyJaan's death he's devastated."

Rakhi: Can Elesh tolerate my nude pics?

Rakhi Sawant goes into her second reality show from Wednesday. It’s a show about parenting with Rakhi and Elesh playing mother and father.

There’s one hitch. Babies give Rakhi a headache. “I’ve a migraine problem. When a child cries I get a severe headache . I don’t know how I’ll manage for a month with a stranger’s child. On top of that I’ve to cook on the show. I can’t cook to save my life.”

Ask her how she will cope when she has her own kids and Rakhi retorts, “Apna bachcha to har koi paal leta hai, jaanwar bhi. I don’t know how I’ll cope. I think I’m going to lose my cool completely. So far people have only seen the good Rakhi Sawant. Now they’ll see the real me. Elesh returned from his sister's wedding on Tuesday night. We enter the show from Wednesday. I don’t know how I’ll manage. This show is already giving me a headache. I can’t even use makeup. Can you imagine Rakhi Sawant without makeup?”

Rakhi was supposed to visit her reality-show fiancĂ© Elesh’s home -town in Toronto. “But I couldn’t get a visa from the US to Canada. I had to really get pushed around for my US visa. It was impossible to get a visa from the US to Canada. Elesh’s family was very keen to have me over. They came for my Swayamvar all the way to Mumbai. And I couldn’t for for them. But no problem. As soon as my new reality show Pati Patni Aur Woh is over I’ll visit his family in Toronto with Elesh.”

Rakhi says she’ll marry Elesh only when he becomes economically self sufficient. “It’s my life and a decision like marriage should be left to me only. Elesh may be the best person in the world. But he may not be be the best person for me.I don’t want him to be another Abhishek Awasthi in my life. Yes,we’re engaged. I like him a lot. But how can I hand over my life to someone who isn’t earning a proper living? That’s why we’re going on another reality show to see whether we’re really as compatible as we seemed on Rakhi Ka Swayamvar.I didn’t get enough time on him on that show. You and I saw his best face. Now I want to see the real Elesh.I want to marry a man who can support me. When we go to a restaurant he should pay the bill, not me. In India wives are supposed to be looked after by husbands, not vice versa. He has seen how I live. I don’t want him to come and stay in my house I want to live in his house. I will wait for him to afford a house.I will wait.”

Rakhi is specially worried about Elesh accepting her sexy image. “On the internet they’ve morphed my face on naked bodies. Would Elesh be able to tolerate it? He’s broad-minded, yes. But God knows what he’d be like after marriage.”

She bursts into tears. “Mere dil mein bahut taqleef hai. Will Elesh be able to support me financially? I don’t want him to be known as Rakhi Sawant’s husband. Mujhe waqt chahiye. I feel I’m stuck in a stormy ocean.I can’t climb the cross just to please public. I agree Elesh is educated and he comes from a wealthy family. But all of it belongs to his father. He has nothing of his own in Mumbai, not even a home. He needs time to settle down. In the meanwhile people are spreading dirty rumours about me. Ek insaan kitna bardaasht kare?”

Rakhi is disgusted by singer Mika’s attempts to make mileage out of her name. “I’m really tired of people using my name. I don’t want to give such people more importance. I’ve learnt the hard way how to be dignified.Jesus has taught me to be calm. My good days are just beginning. Let me remind these publicity seekers that short cuts don’t get you anywhere.”

Rakhi says she’s going through a lot of turmoil. “They are writing all kinds of things making up all kinds of quotes about Elesh on my behalf. They’re all taking advantage of me. I’m being used for publicity by so many people. Why are people doing these things with me? Jesus knows how much I’m suffering.”

Speaking on her former boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi Rakhi says, “I still consider him my good friend. I hope and pray he finds a good girl to marry. If ever in life he needs me I’ll always be there. If needs me to be a dance partner in a reality show I’ll gladly do the needful. He has supported me a lot. I’ll always be thankful to him for getting my mother out of my life. That’s one good deed he did. If Abhishek hadn’t been there I’d have not had the courage to break away from my family. I’d have been wallowing in mud. Aaj Rakhi Swant nahin hoti. I’d have been something else. I can’t even say what I’d have been.”

Rakhi thinks her good days have started. “I know Elesh is a decent guy. But is that enough? He has be financially independent. He needed a place and a face to latch on to, that’s why he came on the show. Abhishek Awasthi was so decent. But he was know as Rakhi’s boyfriend.”

Akshay flaunts his tattooed body

Ladies, there's reason to cheer, for Akshay will be showing off his well-toned and muscular body, which will be enhanced by two tattoos in Blue. Akshay already has his son's name tattooed on his back, while the word 'blue' has been temporarily inked on the back of his neck for the film.

A source said, “Akshay plays the character of a rich businessman who is obsessed with money and thirsts for more. He plays a driven man who does not hesitate to flaunt his arrogance and status. He owns the company, Blue Shipping & Fisheries, and is named Aarav in the film. It was director Anthony's idea to have Blue tattooed on the back of Akshay's neck as it would add that extra edge to his character. And it was sheer presence of mind to call Akshay's character Aarav as he had already inked his son's name on his back.”

When you’ve got it ... flaunt it, we say.

Akshay Kumar’s love for the martial arts is evident as he hosts an international karate championship in style. For the first International Open Karate-do Championship, the karate championship that he is sponsoring, he is getting international grandmasters, Shihan Hirano Osamu (10th degree black belt) and Shihan Kazo Inoue (16th generation grandmaster of Mugai-ryu, the Japanese sword fighting). Also, Shihan Richard De Hass, a referee of international repute, will be flown in from Holland for the competition.

Osamu and Inoue are expected to be in India on October 19, while Richard will arrive a day later. The training will be followed by the competition, which will be held in Mumbai from October 22 to 26.

Mehul Vora, the brain behind the competition, confirmed the news. He said, "No entrant will be charged any fee. The food and stay of every entrant will be borne by Akshay."

Mehul has been a martial arts practitioner for 27 years and an international teacher for 15 years. He has been training Akshay’s son, Aarav, in karate for three years now and he suggested that Akshay sponsor the competition.

We have already received 1,500 entries and will close entries after filling up 2000 seats,” added Mehul.

It’s an exclusive

For Aarti Chhabria, this one has a lot to do with fate. Like the film’s title - Toss - A flip of destiny, this role too is going to be the deciding factor for her career. This is what she says, for Aarti considers her character in Toss, Sasha, to be a ‘very exclusive one’.

After working in films like Lajja, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon, Ssukh, Awara Pagaal Dewana, Raja Bhaiya, Teesri Aankh, Shoot Out at Lokhandwala, Partner and Heyy Babyy, along with a couple of south Indian films, Aarti is back with Knox Entertainment, Mukesh. D. Ramani and Ramesh Khatkar’s film, Toss.

“Toss is a story of a group of childhood friends, and how one incident changes their relationships, beliefs, love and trust. It’s a thriller,” tells Aarti, who is playing the role of Sasha, an extrovert, fun-loving, ambitious girl. “Prashant Raj, who worked in RGV’s Sholay, is cast opposite me in the film,” she adds. According to Aarti, Sasha’s character is unique, “I’ve never played a role like this. Mostly, comedy or romance has been my forte.’’ To work on her role more, Aarti learnt the Konkanese accent, and the way Goan girls walk and talk. “Their mannerisms, the way they dress up, everything,” she adds that the entire star cast attended the film’s workshop before the shoot

Mallika gets saucy with Dolce & Gabbana!

The high-end clothing designer is now dressing the crossover star, in an arrangement recently made that first had Mallika in a sexy suit for her special recognition by the City of Los Angeles, the first of its kind ever received by an Indian actor.

Does this mean that gone are the days of Mallika's eye-popping sensational creations that steal headlines and fill up news and website pages? Not necessarily, says the star. "D&G has some very saucy dresses. I have a few on hold that I think my fans will like."

This is Mallika's first collaboration with a top designer, which also happens to be a favorite of hers. "D&G is the epitome of class. I'm very happy to be associated with the D&G brand," she goes on to say, "We make a great team."

Making history in Hollywood with the first special recognition of a Bollywood star by the City of Los Angeles, the first star from Asia invited to the Twitter offices, the first Bollywood star to have a milkshake named after her in Hollywood, starring in the first Indo-American co-production in decades ("Hisss"), soon her first all-American film playing a lead role inspired in-part by Kamala "the female Barack Obama" Harris, and now a muse for world-class Dolce & Gabbana... one can only wonder what's next for the B-town bombshell!

Mallika has been residing in Los Angeles since the beginning of post-production on HISSS, co-starring Irrfan Khan, and is set to start shooting her new film there in November.

I don't believe in VIP culture, says SRK

n an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan spoke about his detention at the US airport and denied that it was a publicity stunt for his upcoming movie My Name Is Khan.

Shah Rukh said it was an unpleasant experience and he would never do something like this for publicity.

Here is an excerpt of the interview -

Rajdeep Sardesai: Critics are saying that Shah Rukh Khan’s detention in America has been hyped by Shah Rukh himself and it is a publicity stunt for the upcoming film My Name Is Khan. How do you react to that?

Shah Rukh Khan: As a matter of fact my film is coming much later, there are still some eight to nine months to go and we normally don’t start promotion of the movie this early. Moreover, it is not very positive when someone asks you for vouching for you to enter someone’s country. Though I don’t want to say this word, I would say it is a bit disrespectful.

Rajdeep Sardesai: People are detained and questioned in American airports post 9/11, this is a regular practice there. Then why should suddenly Shah Rukh Khan take it as a personal upfront? Was it that how can you detain me, I am Shah Rukh Khan?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I am very humble about what I am. I may talk about myself when I talk about my films otherwise I am very humble. I am very scared of rules and therefore always abide by them. Like everyone even I had those instances when I have been subjected to very thorough special security checking.

Rajdeep Sardesai: The problem perhaps in India is that our security system is not tough enough. We still work on VIP system where a Shah Rukh Khan or a big politician can easily walk through an airport without being checked.

Shah Rukh Khan: Whenever I am flying I always stand in queues and make my children do the same.

Rajdeep Sardesai: You don’t believe in VIP culture?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I never called anyone asking please get me inside faster. I have not done that even in a night club. Even in India I don’t believe in saying ‘don’t you know who I am’ when I am asked for my identification.

Katrina denies relationship with John Abraham

Relationship between Katrina Kaif and John Abraham while they were shooting their film together, New York. Though the talks now have died down what with both Kat and John vehemently denying any such thing having happened, it cant be denied that Katrina’s rapport with boyfriend Salman Khan has not exactly been great since then. Adding to her woes now is an offer from Dev D maker Anurag Kashyap to star in his next opposite John Abraham. It is learnt that the maverick film maker is making a series of movies about life in Mumbai and John is the only one who has been officially signed up so far. Anurag apparently has also sent the script across to Katrina who seems to have loved it. Sources close to her claim, it’s just the kind of film Kats would like to do at this point in time when she has just begun to make her mark as an actress. But she is still in two minds about signing up for the movie. The primary reason is that she is not sure if she wants to be be paired opposite John Abraham again. Katrina is in no mood to handle the rumours that she is sure will resurface.

Kaminey | Good, bad and the sexy

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey has been the most anticipated film of this year. And justifiably so. His earlier works are products of a ripe, evolved imagination—one that gives flight to the ugly, and revels in it. In his two most successful films—Maqbool and Omkara—lurks a thick texture of rot and violence. It is in the air that the bad, foul-mouthed goons and gangsters inhabit. It’s in the milieu, the story, the climate and the temper.

Kaminey is no different, although alongside the evil, there’s its equally riveting—and flawed—flipside, the good. The bad and good are intertwined by blood, hate and circumstances in this multi-plot story—a narrative circle of interconnecting, time-jumping episodes that involve gangsters, druglords, their flunkies and some ordinary people. As in all his films, Bhardwaj blurs the boundaries of morality.

Suffice it to say, it is indeed the year’s best film so far.It is everything you expected it to be: brutal, sexy, and not pretty. The song Dhan ta nan, which pulled off the film’s promotion, is, in fact, not one of the film’s best things. There’s much more happening here.

The story has too many strands for me to outline here. Essentially, it’s about Charlie and Guddu, twins separated after their father died a sudden, tragic death. They are each other’s diametric opposites: Guddu (Shahid Kapur) is an NGO worker who lives in a concrete Mumbai chawl; he stammers. He has planned his life: success in 2009, marriage in 2014, children in 2016, towards which he is earnestly working. Guddu is in love with Sweety (Priyanka Chopra), a feisty Maharashtrian girl, the sister of a gangster, Bhope (Amole Gupte). Charlie on the other hand, is only after money. He hedges bets in horse races and has no qualms about killing someone for a lakh of rupees. Fearless and gleefully self-destructive, he dreams of owning his own betting booth one day. Guddu and Charlie don’t see eye to eye.

These three characters are the story’s centre, but much of what makes Kaminey so engaging are the other characters propelling the story.

Bhardwaj uses the entire first half of the film in establishing the characters, but there’s hardly a dull moment because the scenes are bolstered by superb dialogues (written by Bhardwaj himself) and a humour that has his roots as much in the situations and the characters, as in the city in which the characters live. Gritty Mumbai, by the gutters, and in luxury hotel suites, gets its due. The entire film is visually enticing, filmed by Tassdduq Husain, who also shot Omkara.

You watch one potent scene after another, and then get to the climax. Kaminey has this effect: it psychs you up to accept everything it shows you. After I walked out of the theatre, I took time to absorb all that had happened. Which is not to say that the story is so intricately layered with meanings. It’s not. Kaminey is meant to be a thrilling ride; it is a smart and stylish potboiler.

Its calculated grunginess somewhat works against it. The cleverness of the writers (four people get credit: Vishal Bhardwaj, Abhishek Chaubey, Supratik Sen and Sabrina Dhawan) are evident is every scene. Although Bhardwaj never loses touch with the ordinary look of things, or the common touch, the style overpowers the film. The climax scene is a bizarrely funny episode that is meant to be ironic, but it gets drowned in all the noise.

Kaminey is in the genre of Pulp Fiction, Mean Streets, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Satya. In these films the multi-plot narrative is taken to the perfect pitch, where every character has a complete, satisfying graph. Here, it’s more a mosaic. Like one of its memorable characters, Kaminey is a tad too high on cocaine in parts.

Bhardwaj’s biggest achievement is in extracting performances out of Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra. In two different roles, Kapur is always in character; the lisp and the stammer comes at just the right time. Kapur’s career should take a different turn after this performance, undoubtedly he can be one of the best actors we have. Chopra’s role as the mulgi (Maharashtrian for girl, that’s what her brother calls her) doesn’t seem laboured although the Maharashtrian accent doesn’t really have that raspy zing. The performance by Amole Gupte as the mean, hilarious gangster whose enemy is any outsider who comes to live in Mumbai is memorable.

Kaminey is a film of danger, hilarity and vibrant local colour. It is thrillingly alive; go get high.

Kaminey released in theatres across the country on Friday. In Mumbai, navi Mumbai and Thane, it is scheduled to release on 17 August, Monday.
